Catching up

So Hello again.

I really wish there wasn't a time stamp on this thing so everyone knew how far behind I am. But it does. So I'll have to deal with it.

So in dealing with the editing process I again wanted to work with The Life Aquatic. One of my favorite parts of this film is the argument between Zissou and his son that travels through the entire ship. The film switches back and forth throughout between the soundstage opensided ship (seen above) and a (potentially)real ship. The arguement takes place in the soundstage ship. The camera moves with them in one steady shot from room to room. The resulting shot is extremely long with very few interuptions. I saw this as an attempt to maintain continuity in the argument without forcing it to occur in one place. There is an obvious sense of movement, but the argument continues without interruption.
This is one of many interesting editing choices in this film. As I mentioned earlier, this seems like a very intentional artistic choice and is intended to be noticed. I have yet to decide what effect this has on the film. I originally didn't like this film so much because of its emphasis on the artistic instead of story. "The Royal Tenenbaums" created a wonderful story and characters that this attempt just doesn't have. The direction of this film (art, music, and otherwise) is much more impressive, but it leads to a more empty experience.
